15+ Kid-Friendly Things to Do in Charleston
A Local Mom’s Guide to Exploring Charleston with Littles in Tow
Planning a family trip to Charleston? You’re in for a treat. I’m Christina—travel blogger, founder of Jetset Christina, and mom of two tiny frequent flyers. As a Charleston local, I’ve scouted out all the best spots that are actually fun with kids (and still enjoyable for parents, too).
Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or building out your dream Charleston itinerary, this guide has everything you need to make magical, low-stress memories in the Holy City.
Let’s dive in.

South Carolina Aquarium
Located right on Charleston Harbor, this aquarium is a hit for all ages. From sea turtles and otters to the mesmerizing two-story ocean tank, it’s the perfect indoor activity for a hot or rainy day.
Jetset Mom Tip: Head to the stingray touch tank early before it gets crowded. There’s also a nursing room and stroller-friendly paths throughout the aquarium.

Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry
This place is toddler heaven. Think: pirate ships, castles, water play, and even a dedicated baby zone. It’s chaotic in the best way, and fully set up for young kids to learn through play.
Jetset Mom Tip: Go early, and bring a change of clothes for the water area!

Magnolia Plantation & Gardens
Take a walk through dreamy Lowcountry gardens, spot peacocks, and let the kiddos explore the petting zoo. The nature train is an easy way to cover a lot of ground with little legs.
Jetset Mom Tip: Bring snacks, bug spray, and don’t skip the wildlife observation tower.
Waterfront Park & Pineapple Fountain
A Charleston classic. Let the kids splash in the pineapple fountain, grab an ice cream nearby, and take in the harbor views. A relaxed (and Instagram-worthy) outing.
Jetset Mom Tip: Head to Sorelle Mercato for an iced latte before walking over! It’s my favorite spot for coffee, and if you’re there early enough you can snag a chic, stroller-friendly outdoor table.

Fort Sumter Ferry & Historic Site
If your son or daughter is a history buff, hop aboard a scenic ferry ride (already fun for kids), then explore this historic fort where the Civil War began. Wide open spaces for exploring means less stress for parents.
Jetset Mom Tip: Bring water and snacks for the ferry ride.
Charleston City Market
Four blocks of handmade goods, sweetgrass baskets, and Southern treats. Perfect for an early morning stroll before the crowds hit.
Jetset Mom Tip: Let the kids pick out a small souvenir—it’s a great way to keep talking to them about the trip after you get home and to keep them engaged and excited about travel!
Sullivan’s Island Beach
This is the beach to visit with kids. Clean, wide, and calm surf makes it perfect for toddlers and sandcastle pros alike.
Our Favorite Lunch Spot: Home Team BBQ. So good. The pulled pork, the sides, the laid-back vibe—it’s a post-beach ritual for us. And don’t leave without ice cream. We always stop at Beardcat’s Sweet Shop—right under The Obstinate Daughter. Their house-made gelato is next-level.
Jetset Mom Tip: Street parking is free, but go early. Also there are no public bathrooms, so plan accordingly!

Shem Creek Boardwalk
A peaceful boardwalk through marshlands where you might spot dolphins and pelicans. It’s somewhat stroller-friendly and lined with restaurants perfect for a sunset dinner.
Jetset Mom Tip: I recommend Tavern & Table for a cute dinner spot for little ones. Book ahead for a table!
James Island County Park
This park is a local favorite for a reason—playgrounds, trails, a splash pad in summer, and even kayak rentals.
Jetset Mom Tip: Rent a pedal boat and cruise the lake—it’s a hit with older kids. And if you’re there in the holiday-time, definitely check out the James Island Lights!
Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum
If your kids are into planes or ships, this is a must. Climb aboard the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier, check out helicopters, and explore the hangar bay.
Jetset Mom Tip: Bring snacks and water—there’s a lot of walking and climbing involved.
Shop King Street
Start your shopping afternoon by popping in the best store on King Street for cute kids clothes and swimwear Kenny Flowers at 345 King Street, then head to lunch at nearby Bartaco, and keep walking down King Street.
Bonus: Just Wander
Charleston is made for wandering. Let the kids run around White Point Garden, count rainbow houses on Rainbow Row, or take a slow stroller stroll through the historic South of Broad neighborhood.
Jetset Mom Tip: There’s no bad time to explore—sunrise and sunset walks are especially magical.
